Making a statement

If you choose to report to the police, you will be asked to make a statement.

You can ask for female officers only to be present whilst you do this.

Initially, the police will ask you questions to make sure that you are safe, such as: Have you had medical attention or do you need to?

They will ask you questions about you, the offence and the offender.
For example, they will ask you if you know the offender or if not, what they look like. They will also ask you when and where the offence took place and what type of offence it was: sexual assault or rape. They will also ask if you have told anyone else and if there were any witnesses before, during or after the offence.

You should try and tell the police all the details. This can be distressing and embarrassing so take the time you need. If you can’t remember all the details, be honest about that too.
